These are a few ideas for the upcoming week. They're in no particular order but they are the companies I'll be investing in as funds become available in my accounts. They're each showing a nice estimated one year return on investment, increasing earnings, and pay at least a minimal dividend. I believe that each of these has a greater potential return than analysts currently expect. As with all investments, I start with small positions and then add to that position over time through dividend reinvestment, the sale of stock options and direct purchases of the stock.

I know you really like agricultural field stocks and noticed today that Land is going to offer a $25 preferred a 6.375. What is your opinion on this as I never got into land yet and just watching the price go up. Thanks for your great website and time.

Larry...

As you know, preferred shares always have preferential treatment over equity shares when it comes to dividend payments (although they're behind bonds) but I don't think that matters much with LAND or any of the Gladstone Companies. I believe all of the Gladstone Companies are solid investments on almost any level so it really comes down to whether you will be happy with a 6.375% more or less guaranteed return on your investment. Personally I think that's a nice income if you need it for retirement or a good return if you plan to reinvest those funds in the same or a similar type investment.

Unfortunately I don't normally invest in preferreds simply because I prefer the leverage provided by equities. It's just a person choice. LAND itself pays a lesser dividend but I expect it to increase in price as the bottom line profits increase.

It's really an individual investor's personal choice between risk and security. The equity has more risk, the preferred has more security. That may or may not have answered your question but you need to know that I would feel very comfortable owning any type of shares issued by the Gladstone Companies. I own shares in all four Gladstone companies and I have each one on dividend reinvestment. So far I've been very happy with my positions.

By the way, I do like owning agricultural field stocks as well as owning actual farmland. I also like and own shares of companies in the timberland farming business. People will always need food and shelter (timber) and I'm proud to be a very small part of that industry.

I wish you the best in all your trades. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Respectfully,
Dennis McCain

I am an Individual Investor with specific interest in long term growth and then enhancing my returns with income from dividends and derivatives. I don't recommend stocks to anyone (it's a good way to lose friends) and no one reading this should misinterpret my blog as a recommendation for any type of investment. I am writing this solely for myself and my kids.
